When you finish a hard workout, your body doesn't immediately go back to idle. For a while afterward, it keeps burning energy at a slightly elevated rate, even while you sit still.

it’s called EPOC, or excess post-exercise oxygen consumption. Most people just call it the afterburn.

It's a real effect, and it's worth understanding what it is and what it isn't.

What's Actually Happening

A workout does more than burn calories in the moment. It leaves your body with things to repair.

You've used up fuel, run up an oxygen debt, and left your muscle tissue slightly stressed. Getting back to baseline takes energy in the form of restoring oxygen levels, clearing out metabolic byproducts, repairing muscle fibers, and returning your body temperature to normal. That work continues after you've stopped moving, and you’re burning calories the whole time. The harder the workout, the bigger the mess to clean up, and the longer that elevated burn lasts.

How Much It's Worth

The size of the effect is the part worth being precise about.

For most workouts, EPOC adds roughly 6-15% on top of the calories you burned during the session itself. Burn 300 calories in a workout, and the afterburn might add another 20 to 45 over the following hours. It's a real contribution, but a modest one. And most of it happens within the first hour or so after you finish, then tapers off quickly rather than running for days.

Intensity is the main lever. Hard intervals and heavy strength work create a bigger afterburn than steady, moderate cardio, because they run up a larger oxygen debt and do more muscle damage to repair. That said, the size of the afterburn doesn't dictate which workout burns the most overall. A longer, steady session often burns more total energy than a short intense one, even though the intense one has the larger afterburn.

The Useful Takeaway

The afterburn is best thought of as a small bonus on top of the real work, not a strategy on its own.

Where it gets really useful is what it points toward. The training that produces the most afterburn, HIIT and heavy lifting, is also the training that builds and preserves muscle. And muscle is what moves the needle long-term. Every pound of muscle raises the calories you burn all day, whether you're training or resting. That standing increase in your baseline burn matters far more over months than any single afterburn window does over a few hours.

So the afterburn isn't the reason to train hard. It's a nice side effect of training that happens to build muscle, and the muscle is what does the real work.
