That’s where mental models come in handy. These frameworks let you see the world more clearly, move faster, and make fewer mistakes.
Today, I’m giving you a lineup of 26 models to keep handy as you plan, build, and upgrade your life in 2026.
1. First Principles Thinking
Start by stripping away assumptions and breaking a problem down to its fundamental facts or physical laws.
Instead of copying what’s been done, ask: what’s actually necessary here? This is why many breakthroughs start with “does it have to be this way?”
2. Inversion
Rather than focusing only on how to achieve a goal, consider the opposite: “How could this go wrong?” or “How might I fail?” This reversal makes blind spots visible and helps you avoid preventable mistakes.
Don’t just plan to succeed. Also plan to avoid failure.
3. Margin of Safety
Always include extra room in your plans. More time, more money, and more bandwidth than you think you need.
Surprises are inevitable.
Whether it’s engineering, investing, or project management, systems with a cushion tend not to break when things go off script.
4. Opportunity Cost
Whenever you choose one thing, you’re giving up something else.
Weigh not only the benefit of what you’re doing, but what you have to sacrifice to do it.
This helps you prioritize high-value actions over busywork.
5. Compounding
Tiny improvements, stacked over time, can lead to explosive results.
Compound interest isn’t just a financial concept. It’s the hidden force behind lifelong learning and exponential change.
6. Second-Order Effects
Most changes have ripple effects. The first consequence is rarely the last.
For every decision, ask: “And then what?”
Think through the follow-on impacts. Sometimes the side effects are more important to consider than the initial outcome.
7. Occam’s Razor
When you’re faced with competing explanations or solutions, start with the simplest one that fits the facts.
Complexity often adds confusion and error. Simple models are easier to test and fix.
8. Feedback Loops
Every system feeds on its own output.

10. Hanlon’s Razor
“Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.”
Don’t assume bad outcomes are caused by evil intent. Often, they’re the result of oversight, ignorance, or accident. This mindset prevents overreacting and keeps relationships intact.
11. Survivorship Bias
If you only study winners, you miss lessons from those who didn’t make it. Whether in business, sports, or science, always look at the full population.
Failure stories are rich with warning signs.
12. Incentive-Caused Bias
People (including you) are driven by what gets rewarded.
Incentives shape actions, sometimes in unexpected ways. Before you blame character, examine the reward structure.
Set up incentives to drive the behaviors you actually want.
13. Sunk Cost Fallacy

Work will balloon to fill the time you give it. Set shorter deadlines to force focus and efficiency.

“Ninety percent of everything is crud.”
Most ideas, products, and solutions aren’t very good. Don’t be discouraged by the many. Keep looking for the worthwhile few.
20. Pareto Principle
Roughly 80% of outcomes come from 20% of causes.
Find the small set of actions or clients that drive most of your results, and focus there for leverage.
21. Scarcity vs. Abundance Mindset
A scarcity mindset hoards resources and worries about loss. An abundance mindset looks for new possibilities and growth.
Use both. Scarcity for risk management, abundance for innovation.
22. Bayes’ Theorem
When new evidence shows up, update your beliefs instead of sticking to old assumptions.
Over time, this makes your decisions more accurate and less brittle.

Organizations often unconsciously resist solving the problem they were created to address.

It does seem to be a struggle to create an actual game of chess using current AI image modeling tools. It looks fine at first, but upon closer inspection the pieces don’t actually make sense. I still wanted to share anyways to illustrate a current limitation.
